INFANT FEEDING SUPPORT

Voluntary Breast & Chest Feeding Support Organisations

These organisations train volunteer peer supporters and breastfeeding counsellors who provide free support by phone and in groups and in some cases through home visiting.

  • The Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (includes a directory of support groups). ABM are a group of trained volunteers dedicated to supporting breastfeeding mums and their families. They have been supporting mums and nurturing families for almost 40 years. As well as supporting breastfeeding mums, they offer training for mothers, families and healthcare professionals who want to further their knowledge. Many of their breastfeeding counsellors are mums who’ve benefited from ABM support and now want to share their knowledge and experience.
  • Breastfeeding Network (includes information on medications and breastfeeding). The Breastfeeding Network (BfN) aims to be an independent source of support and information for breastfeeding women and others. Their vision is a society where mums and families are able to make informed decisions about breastfeeding, to access help when they need it and to become confident in their choices. For a new mum deciding how to feed her baby, talking to a mum who knows about breastfeeding can make a crucial difference and the Breastfeeding Network strives to be the best we can be at providing peer support. Their mission is to offer independent, evidence-based information and support to help build awareness of breastfeeding to individuals and organisations and to support a mum in her choice to breastfeed.
  • La Leche League GB (LLLGB) is part of the international charity La Leche League International. LLLGB Leaders (volunteer breastfeeding counsellors) provide mother to mother support for all breastfeeding mums at every stage of their breastfeeding journey, via a helpline, through social media, online helpforms and face to face at local meetings. LLLGB believes that mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying a baby’s needs.
  • National Childbirth Trust  They state they are the UK’s leading charity for parents, for the First 1,000 Days – right through pregnancy, birth and beyond. They will give you accurate, impartial information through their website and the courses and classes.
